The Right Age for Contacts

Parents often wonder when their children should transition to contact lenses. There's no single definitive answer — it depends on the individual child's maturity level and ability to handle responsibility.

Can Children Learn to Use Contact Lenses

Research shows 90 percent of children in a group of 8- to 11-year-olds were able to use daily disposable contact lenses with little to no trouble. While many parents wait until their children are teenagers, younger elementary and middle school students can successfully manage proper contact lens hygiene if they demonstrate responsibility in other areas of self-care.

Assess whether your child:

  • Remembers to complete everyday self-care tasks
  • Washes their hands regularly without reminders
  • Can handle containers and closures responsibly
  • Will practice lens insertion and removal carefully

Why Children Should Try Contact Lenses

Eye care professionals typically begin encouraging contact lens wear between ages 11 and 14. Starting early allows children to develop comfort and skill with lenses, whereas adults who try them later may need additional time to adapt.

However, some patients prefer glasses throughout their lives, and that preference is equally valid. We encourage families to explore options through a consultation that includes an exam, lens fitting, and follow-up care.
