Introduction to the Eye

Eye health significantly impacts overall wellness and quality of life. Vision is essential for development, work, hobbies, and daily activities.

Parts of the Eye

The eye contains several key structures:

  • Sclera — the white, protective outer layer
  • Pupil — the central opening that allows light entry (appears black due to light absorption)
  • Iris — controls pupil size; determines eye color
  • Cornea — transparent front covering that refracts light, providing about two-thirds of the eye's optical power
  • Crystalline lens — works with the cornea to focus light on the retina and adjust focal distance
  • Retina — light-sensitive tissue that captures images and sends signals to the brain via the optic nerve
  • Macula and fovea — retinal areas containing color and shape-detecting cells

Knowing the anatomy of your eyes and having regular exams is the best way to keep your eyes healthy. Regular eye care supports both childhood development and healthy aging throughout life.
